Creeks and Rivers

Kent Mason, Photographer / Conservationist

Creeks and Rivers provide a wide variety of aquatic habitats for insects, fish, amphibians, reptiles, water birds, and mammals. In addition, mountains are the major source of water for humans. The importance of healthy creeks and rivers cannot be overstated. The main threats to WV creeks and rivers are mining and land development. In WV, mountain top removal (for coal) and valley fill operations are a devastating threat to any creek impacted. The land and water are severely degraded and will never be the same. We all need to support the protection of our water resources. Conserving wild places has a positive and direct impact on our water supply. This gallery illustrates many of the vast number of creeks and rivers in the mountains of WV.
